Refund Methods

Once Customs confirms that the goods are being taken out of Japan, the tax-free sale is finalized. The tax-free shop or refund provider will then refund an amount equivalent to the consumption tax. Refund methods and processing times vary by store. Options may include bank transfer, credit card, an app, or a cash refund at the airport or seaport when you depart Japan. Check the available method when you make your purchase. A refund service fee may apply.

• Complete the tax-free procedure before checking your baggage with the airline. Because goods may need to be inspected, allow plenty of time to get to the airport or seaport on your departure day.
• Tax-free rules and procedures may change. Check the latest information with the National Tax Agency, the Japan Tourism Agency, or the tax-free shop where you make your purchase.
