Buy at a Tax-Free Shop and Complete Customs Procedure
Tax-free shopping is available at stores licensed by the tax office, including stores displaying the "Japan. Tax-free Shop" sign.
At the Time of Purchase
1. Show your passport or other ID when buying at a tax-free shop.
2. Pay the tax-inclusive (taxed) price.
3. Check the shop's instructions on how the consumption tax will be refunded.
The refund is made after Customs confirms at departure that you are taking the eligible goods out of Japan. Refund methods vary by shop, so confirm at the time of purchase. If you use Visit Japan Web, you may be able to use a tax-free shopping QR code at participating stores.
[Note]
Keep your purchases until Customs has checked them when you depart Japan. If you consume food, cosmetics, or similar items in Japan, you will not receive a refund for those items.
Customs Procedures When Departing Japan
You must leave Japan within 90 days of the purchase date and have your goods confirmed by Customs at the airport or seaport.
1. Before checking your baggage with the airline, show your passport at the tax-free procedure kiosk.
2. If no Customs inspection is required, you're done. If an inspection is required, have your goods checked at the Customs inspection area.
3. After Customs confirms the goods are being taken out of Japan, the tax-free shop or refund provider will refund an amount equal to the consumption tax.
[Note]
• You must have all the eligible goods you purchased with you when Customs checks them. Do not check any suitcase containing these goods before completing the procedure.
• Customs checks goods by purchase transaction (as shown on the receipt). If even one item from a transaction is missing, you will not receive a refund for any of the items in that transaction.
• An inspection may be required, so allow plenty of time to get to the airport or seaport.
• For items with a unit price of ¥1 million or more (before tax), you may be asked to present an appraisal certificate or warranty.
• If you do not take the goods confirmed by Customs out of Japan, you will be required to pay the consumption tax, and penalties may also apply.
* Online procedures using Visit Japan Web are also available at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka, New Chitose, and Naha airports. You can use this service only in areas covered by the dedicated Wi-Fi in the international departure lobby (before the security checkpoint).
* If you are connecting from a domestic flight to an international flight, complete the procedure at the last airport you depart from in Japan.
